Directory status is evidence for a named program, not a complete hotel ranking. Original Canopy Trips editorial image. It illustrates the decision and does not depict or endorse a named property.

Use the official CST directory, not a platform badge or hotel logo. Costa Rica’s Certification for Sustainable Tourism provides a stronger evidence trail than an unqualified eco-hotel label, but the property name, category, current status, level, location, and checked date still need to match.

How this page was built: We retargeted the former Booking.com certification tutorial to the official Costa Rica question. The CST directory and ICT definition now anchor the page; Booking.com approval remains pending and no affiliate relationship is implied. Current prices, schedules, inventory, wildlife conditions, certifications, and access rules are not treated as permanent facts.

The short answer

Search the official certified-entity directory, match the legal property name and location, record the category and Basic or Elite level shown, and save the checked date. Then use the property’s own evidence to answer trip-level questions about transport, meals, water, energy, staff, habitat, accessibility, and trade-offs. CST status does not decide whether the hotel fits the route.

What CST evidence can and cannot answer

Field Useful conclusion Remaining question
Directory match Named entity appears in the official system Is the exact guest property and address in scope?
Category Certification applies to a stated tourism sector Which operations and facilities are covered?
Basic or Elite Current level shown by the program What changed since the assessment?
Checked date Reader can judge evidence freshness When will the status be reviewed again?
Hotel fit Not answered by certification alone Does location, price, access, and service fit the trip?

Match the exact legal entity

Hotel groups, management companies, and similarly named properties can create false matches. Compare address, region, legal or public name, and property type. If the directory entry cannot be matched confidently, mark the status not confirmed instead of copying a logo.

Record status as a dated fact

Certification directories change. Save the source URL, category, level, and check date in the page claim ledger. Review the record before publication and on a monthly schedule while the page is active. Remove a claim if the entity disappears or becomes ambiguous.

Do not turn certification into a best-hotel list

CST evidence does not establish room quality, accessibility, value, labor conditions, wildlife practice, or transport efficiency for one itinerary. Use it as one evidence layer after the region and route have been chosen.

Five-minute CST check

  1. Search the official directory using the legal or exact property name.
  2. Match address, region, property type, category, and current level.
  3. Record the source URL and checked date.
  4. Separate official directory facts from hotel-reported operating claims.
  5. Choose the property only after route, access, room, meal, and cancellation checks.

When the certification should not control the booking

Do not choose a certified property that creates excessive transfers, fails accessibility needs, or cannot answer critical room and service questions. A closer property with transparent evidence may fit better, but any unverified environmental claims should remain labeled as operator-reported.

Claim ledger and primary sources

Each source below supports a named planning fact, not a general sustainability endorsement. Marketplace inventory is commercial information and does not verify an operator’s wildlife, labor, or environmental claims.
