Flight Carbon Offsets: What a Credit Can and Cannot Do

Buying a carbon credit does not make a flight disappear. It finances a separate claimed reduction or removal under a particular method. The flight still occurred, the estimate contains assumptions, and the credit has its own quality risks.
How to use this guide: Reduce avoidable travel emissions first. When evaluating a credit, keep the flight estimate, credit type, project method, registry record, retirement, durability, and claims language as separate facts.
Start with the flight decision

Four quality questions
Additionality: would the project activity happen without credit revenue? Durability: how long is carbon kept out of the atmosphere, and what reversal risk exists? Quantification: what baseline, leakage, uncertainty, and monitoring rules are used? Double counting: can the same outcome be claimed by more than one buyer or jurisdiction?
Estimates are not measurements of one seat
Flight calculators use route, aircraft, cabin, load, freight, and climate-effect assumptions. Two legitimate tools can return different figures. Record the tool and date rather than presenting a single number as directly measured.
Retirement matters
- Identify the registry and project.
- Record the credit type and vintage.
- Confirm the serials were retired for the intended claim.
- Read the method, monitoring, and reversal provisions.
- Avoid sellers that provide only a certificate with no registry trail.
Use restrained language
“We purchased and retired credits equal to an estimated quantity” is more accurate than “carbon-neutral flight.” The purchase may support a project, but it does not undo every climate effect of aviation or replace route reduction.
