Kruger Gate and Camp Planner: Build a Legal Route
Editorial note: Canopy Trips has no paid placement in this guide. Booking.com approval is pending, and this page contains no Booking.com affiliate links.

A Kruger camp is a route decision, not only a room decision. Gate hours change by season, day-visitor thresholds can matter, and camps have different facilities. A booking that ignores the arrival gate or next day’s loop can create a long transit day inside the park and pressure the driver near closing time.
How this page was built: This planner uses the official SANParks gates, camps, maps, day-visit, and notification pages. It intentionally avoids static drive-time promises. Road conditions, wildlife stops, speed limits, closures, and congestion make map estimates unsuitable as deadlines. Current prices, schedules, inventory, wildlife conditions, certifications, and access rules are not treated as permanent facts.
The short answer
Select the arrival gate from the actual airport or road approach. Choose the first camp so legal entry leaves generous margin. Build each daily loop backward from the current camp gate deadline, then verify food, fuel, shop, restaurant, medical, and accessibility needs at the named camp.
Plan in the right order
| Step | Decision | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival direction | Airport or road origin, landing time, vehicle collection, outside night |
| 2 | Legal entry gate | Current hours, day-visitor process, booking, identification |
| 3 | First camp | Conservative route, facilities, check-in, food and fuel |
| 4 | Daily loop | Distance, road type, stops, turnaround point, gate margin |
| 5 | Camp change | One-way route that still allows observation and rest |
| 6 | Exit | Final gate, flight margin, rental return, outside fallback |
Do not use map time as a promise
Park speed limits are maximums, not planning speeds. Wildlife on or near the road, slow observation, comfort stops, road surfaces, weather, and congestion all add time. Set a turnaround time well before the theoretical latest point and shorten the loop when the day is moving slowly.
Camp facilities are not uniform
Check the official page for the exact camp and accommodation unit. Confirm kitchen equipment, refrigerator, restaurant or shop, fuel, bedding, air conditioning, accessible features, cellular coverage expectations, and current service notices. Bush camps and smaller camps should not be treated like the largest rest camps.
Arrival day may need an outside night
A late flight, rental delay, shopping stop, or unfamiliar road can make same-day park entry too fragile. Book the first night outside when the legal gate margin is not generous. Never plan to solve a late arrival by speeding or requesting an exception.
Camp changes should reveal a new area
Change camps when the move supports a different habitat, gate, or exit route. Avoid one-night hops that turn the park into a transfer corridor. Two or more nights at a camp allow a flexible loop, a rest period, and a second chance after weather or a quiet drive.
Gate and camp worksheet
- Record current gate hours for every travel date.
- Check day-visitor booking and identification rules when staying outside.
- Verify the exact camp and unit facilities on the official page.
- Set a conservative turnaround time for every independent loop.
- Check SANParks notifications before the cancellation deadline and again before entry.
When to reduce the number of camps
Use one camp when the stay is short, the group dislikes packing, or a camp move would require continuous driving. Add a second camp only when it opens a useful region or exit route and still leaves time for slow observation.
