La Fortuna works best when each day has one primary landscape or nature decision.
The town has extensive visitor infrastructure, while the national park and many hot-spring, trail, and lodge properties sit outside the center. Hotel location changes the transport plan.
Plan in this order: confirm park or reserve access, choose the transport leg, select a stay with verifiable evidence, then book only the activities that fit the route. Recheck operating details close to departure.
Route decision
From San Jose, ground transport is the normal planning baseline. Public transport may require more time and a walk to some attractions. Confirm the current endpoint and final connection.

Confirm the official Arenal entrance
The national park entrance is outside downtown La Fortuna. Check current opening, payment, and access details through the official source rather than a reseller.
Activities
Separate nature guiding from an attraction bundle
A hanging bridge, hot spring, farm, and night walk solve different trip goals. Buying a bundle can create unnecessary transfers and a rushed day.
Stay
Compare town access with resort inclusions
Town access may reduce transport for meals. A resort outside town may include thermal facilities or meals. Compare total movement and cost.
Stay decision
Downtown La Fortuna reduces transport for restaurants and basic services. Properties near the park or hot springs can reduce one activity transfer but may require a vehicle for every meal. When to leave this region out
Leave La Fortuna out when the trip is centered entirely on the Caribbean or far South Pacific and the transfer creates a single rushed night. It is easy to visit, but not geographically close to every Costa Rica route.
