Tortuguero is reached by boat or air and is organized around canals, forest, village access, and protected turtle habitat. A lodge package may combine transport, meals, and tours, so compare inclusions line by line.
Plan in this order: confirm park or reserve access, choose the transport leg, select a stay with verifiable evidence, then book only the activities that fit the route. Recheck operating details close to departure.

La Pavona is the common land-and-boat route. Verify current bus, parking, and boat details with the official source and the chosen provider before departure.

Book the complete connection
Confirm the ground pickup, boat departure, luggage rules, weather policy, and onward connection. A cheap room can become expensive if transfers are separate.

Ask about boat and group size
Compare motorized and paddled routes, guide credentials, departure time, wildlife distance, and whether park entry is included.
Turtles
Follow official seasonal rules
Nesting activity is seasonal and tightly managed. Do not purchase a tour that promises touching, flash photography, guaranteed nesting, or access outside official rules.
Stay decision
Village lodging can make independent meals and walking easier. Canal-side lodges often bundle boats, meals, and activities. Laguna Lodge appeared in ICT sustainability material when checked, but compare the complete package and legal property name rather than the room rate alone.

- Confirm how the property connects to the planned reserve, park, or departure point.
- Record included meals and transfers before comparing the nightly rate.
- Keep operator-reported practices separate from independently verified evidence.
Reservation and operator checks
Write the transfer as a chain: ground departure, La Pavona or other dock, boat operator, final lodge or village stop, and onward connection. Confirm whether national park admission and canal tours are included or purchased separately.
For any guide, ask for the credential, maximum group size, wildlife-contact rules, cancellation terms, and the exact meeting point. A species list describes possibility, not a sighting guarantee.
Practical field notes
Use soft luggage that can be handled on a boat, protect documents from rain, and keep essential medication in a personal bag. Swimming in the sea and lagoons is not recommended in official visitor guidance because of currents, boats, and wildlife.
When to leave this region out
Leave Tortuguero out when the boat connection forces a one-night stay or an unsafe same-day flight connection. Its access is part of the experience and needs enough time to absorb weather or schedule changes.
