Use six hotel nights for two bases, not three. Three nights around San Ignacio and three nights on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye create room for one substantial inland day, one flexible inland day, one transfer, and two reef or island days. The pattern is more durable than adding a one-night southern-coast stop.
How this page was built: This itinerary is built from official Cayo and island destination context, NICH rules for ATM Cave, Fisheries rules for Hol Chan, and current entry and safety guidance. It does not assume a permanent flight, water-taxi, tour, or road schedule. Current prices, schedules, inventory, wildlife conditions, certifications, and access rules are not treated as permanent facts.
The short answer
Arrive and move inland only when the flight and confirmed transfer keep the road segment within a safe personal cutoff. Use days two and three for the primary Cayo experiences. Move to the selected caye on day four. Keep one of days five and six flexible for reef weather, then return for the international departure on day seven with a connection margin that matches the ticket and transport chain.
A workable seven-day sequence
| Day | Base | Job for the day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | San Ignacio | BZE arrival, confirmed transfer, food and recovery |
| 2 | San Ignacio | Regulated cave, Maya site, or guided forest priority |
| 3 | San Ignacio | Second Cayo day with lighter weather exposure |
| 4 | Reef base | Road and boat or domestic-flight transfer; no fixed evening tour |
| 5 | Reef base | Primary reserve day if conditions and operator checks align |
| 6 | Reef base | Weather buffer, local day, or postponed reef departure |
| 7 | BZE route | Protected airport connection with no remote activity attached |
Choose the regulated inland day before the hotel
ATM Cave requires an ATM-certified guide and advance arrangement through a licensed operator. The official visitor page also sets group, equipment, swimming, height, and conduct requirements. If those conditions do not fit the group, choose a different Cayo day before committing the room and transfer around ATM.
The transfer day must include the dock or domestic terminal
San Ignacio to a caye is not one movement. The chain may include hotel pickup, road travel, luggage transfer, a water-taxi terminal or domestic airport, the crossing or flight, and the final room. Save the exact addresses and last usable departure, then leave the evening uncommitted.
One unscheduled island day protects the expensive day
Marine conditions can change the reserve trip even when the island weather looks pleasant. Keep one reef-base day available as a swap. If both days operate, use the second for a local walk, kayak, food stop, or an additional activity chosen after the first day rather than booking two rigid departures in advance.
The island choice changes the itinerary
Caye Caulker favors a compact, foot-and-bicycle trip. Ambergris Caye offers a larger base with more moving parts. Choose from the exact room, dock, restaurant, and tour meeting points. Do not select an island solely from a resort photograph or a claim that one is always quieter.
Seven-day booking order
- Choose Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye before booking the cross-country transfer.
- Confirm the licensed operator and guide rule for the inland priority.
- Keep a second island day available for a weather-driven reef change.
- Save every road, dock, flight, luggage, and final-room handoff.
- Avoid intercity driving after dark and protect the final BZE connection.
- Recheck tour, transport, and reserve terms shortly before travel.
When seven days should become a different trip
Use one base only when arrival and departure consume most of two days or when the group needs slow mornings and minimal repacking. Drop ATM when swimming, height, fitness, conduct, or equipment rules do not fit. Drop the caye transfer when a southern-coast stay already supplies the trip’s marine objective and a third region would remove the weather buffer.
