Costa Rica 10-Day Itinerary: Three-Base Nature Route

Ten days can support three bases when each stay earns at least two useful days. This route connects La Fortuna, Monteverde, and the Manuel Antonio or Uvita corridor. It leaves Osa and Tortuguero for trips built around their more demanding access.
Route at a glance
| Days | Base | Primary job | Constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | La Fortuna | Arenal landscape and nature activities | Choose one main activity per day |
| 4 to 6 | Monteverde | Cloud forest and guided natural history | Mountain transfer consumes time |
| 7 | South Pacific transfer | Reach Manuel Antonio or Uvita | Do not add a timed arrival-day tour |
| 8 to 9 | Manuel Antonio or Uvita | Pacific park or marine day plus buffer | Official ticket and weather planning |
| 10 | Departure | Return toward airport or continue | Allow road and check-in buffer |
Choose Manuel Antonio or Uvita, not both by default
Manuel Antonio has a formal park reservation process and denser visitor infrastructure. Uvita provides access to Ballena National Marine Park and a longer South Pacific corridor. Staying in both can add a hotel change without adding a different enough planning job.
Where to place flexibility
Keep one lower-commitment day in La Fortuna or the South Pacific for rain, fatigue, or transport disruption. Weather-sensitive activity cancellation terms matter more than filling every calendar slot.
Stay research
Use current CST evidence, then compare access. A remote lodge may require more driving or a bundled transfer, while a town hotel can reduce repeated vehicle movements. Neither format is automatically lower impact.
Why Osa and Tortuguero are excluded
Both deserve dedicated planning. Corcovado uses advance reservation processes and guided access requirements for some routes. Tortuguero is reached by boat or air. Adding either to this loop can create a fourth logistics system.
