Costa Rica 7-Day Itinerary: Two Bases, Fewer Transfers

Seven days support two nature bases well. Three usually turns the trip into a transfer schedule. This route uses La Fortuna and Monteverde because the pairing offers different ecosystems without adding a coast-to-coast detour.
Route at a glance
| Day | Base | Plan | Booking decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | La Fortuna | Arrival and ground transfer | Do not schedule a timed activity after a long flight |
| 2 | La Fortuna | Arenal park or reserve day | Verify opening and transport |
| 3 | La Fortuna | Guided nature, farm, or low-key recovery day | Screen the operator and group size |
| 4 | Monteverde | Transfer day | Confirm pickup, luggage, and arrival time |
| 5 | Monteverde | Cloud-forest reserve | Reserve access and guide if desired |
| 6 | Monteverde | Night walk or community activity | Choose one primary activity |
| 7 | Departure route | Ground transfer to airport or next base | Allow mountain-road buffer |
Days 1 to 3: La Fortuna
Use the first afternoon to recover and confirm the next day’s park details. On day two, choose one primary landscape or trail experience. On day three, add a guided nature walk, farm visit, or slower activity rather than stacking multiple wildlife products.
Day 4: transfer to Monteverde
Treat the transfer as the day’s main logistical task. Shared shuttle, private transfer, rental car, and combined lake routes have different pickup rules and luggage handling. Confirm the exact operator and endpoint before selecting the Monteverde hotel.
Days 5 and 6: Monteverde
Choose the reserve first, then a lodging location that does not create unnecessary repeated transfers. A night walk can complement a daylight reserve visit, but operator conduct and group size matter more than a promised animal list.
When this route is wrong
- Choose Manuel Antonio and Uvita instead if coast time is essential.
- Choose Tortuguero as a dedicated segment if canals and turtle habitat are the priority.
- Choose Osa as the center of a longer trip, not as a third base in seven days.
- Stay in one region if mobility, budget, or work schedules make transfer days costly.
