Galápagos Travel Field Guide: Park Rules Before the Cruise
Editorial note: Canopy Trips has no paid placement in this guide. Booking.com approval is pending, and this page contains no Booking.com affiliate links.
Galápagos visitor rules are part of the itinerary, not a courtesy list at the end. Choose a land-based or liveaboard structure, then verify official entry steps, park sites, licensed services, wildlife rules, baggage controls, and the exact route.
Field-guide method: Use the Galápagos National Park and Ecuadorian authorities for current entry, fee, biosecurity, site, guide, and wildlife requirements. Treat operator conservation language as a separate commercial claim.
Build the route
| Base or segment | Use it for | Constraint | Verify before payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Land-based Santa Cruz | Hotels plus day trips | Boat time, daily site availability | Licensed day-tour operator |
| Land-based multi-island | Town stays and inter-island movement | Ferries, baggage, sea state | Transfer and site plan |
| Liveaboard cruise | Fixed multi-site route | Cabin, vessel, schedule, sea conditions | Authorized vessel and itinerary |
| Diving itinerary | Specialist marine trip | Certification, currents, vessel, permits | Exact operator and safety plan |
Keep distance from wildlife
Park guidance includes maintaining distance, not touching or feeding animals, staying on trails, and using authorized services. A camera lens, guide pressure, or crowded path does not change the rule.
Land and cruise are different products
A land stay can support town businesses and flexible pacing but relies on repeated boat trips for some sites. A cruise can reach a fixed sequence efficiently but concentrates lodging, meals, and transport in one vessel. Compare the exact route.
Biosecurity is conservation work
Follow baggage and inspection rules, clean footwear and equipment, and never move plants, animals, shells, sand, or food outside the permitted system. Confirm current rules before packing.
Operator claims
Ask for the legal vessel or company, guide credentials, park authorization, group size, route, fuel and waste practices, local employment, and conservation contribution. Do not infer quality from the word expedition.
