Volunteer Travel: Screen the Work Before You Book

A volunteer trip can create work for a host, displace paid staff, or expose vulnerable people even when the traveler means well. The program must prove that the role is locally requested, appropriately skilled, safely supervised, and better than funding qualified local work directly.

Do not volunteer in an orphanage
Short-term access to children in residential care creates safeguarding and attachment concerns and can support demand for institutionalization. A background check does not make a visitor-led care model appropriate.
Match the role to the skill
- Clinical, legal, engineering, animal-care, and construction work requires the host’s credentials and supervision rules.
- Teaching needs curriculum, language, continuity, and safeguarding, not only fluency in English.
- Wildlife work should avoid handling created for the volunteer experience.
- Research should define methods, data ownership, permits, and publication access.
- Manual work should not replace local paid labor or create maintenance burdens.
Ask whether money is more useful
Compare the full trip cost with a donation or purchase from the local organization. Travel can be justified by a real role, but the experience value to the traveler is not proof of host impact.
Leave a clean exit
Do not retain identifiable beneficiary data, publish a vulnerable person’s story, or promise ongoing contact outside the host’s policy. Report concerns through the named route and keep the host in control of records and continuity.
