Start with the watershed, then choose the treatment system. Clear freshwater in a low-activity wilderness area usually presents a narrower microbial problem than water near livestock, farms, sewage, or dense campsites. A microfilter can address many bacteria and protozoa, but it should not be treated as a virus purifier. If chemical contamination, fuel, mine waste, harmful algae, radioactivity, salt, or brackish water is suspected, none of the four products here is a complete answer. Filter, purifier, and standard language
A camping filter and a purifier are different categories. CDC explains that most microfilters remove bacteria and protozoa but do not reliably remove enteric viruses. For the EPA purifier designation, manufacturers must demonstrate at least 99.9999% bacteria reduction, 99.99% virus reduction, and 99.9% Cryptosporidium or Giardia reduction. NSF terminology also needs care. NSF/ANSI 42 concerns aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste, and odor. NSF/ANSI 53 concerns specified health-effect contaminants. NSF P231 concerns microbiological water purifiers. Certification to one standard does not mean a system reduces every contaminant. The public P231 directory reviewed on August 25, 2026 did not list the four candidates below. Make the field decision
First, identify whether the source is fresh, cloudy, near human or animal activity, or subject to a formal warning. Second, decide whether bacteria and protozoa are the only credible microbial concerns. If yes, a microfilter may be enough for that source category. If viruses are credible, narrow the choice to a documented purifier and follow its instructions. Do not convert a manufacturer performance claim into universal protection.
Third, size the workflow. A squeeze or soft-flask system suits immediate personal fills. Gravity treatment favors a group that can wait for production. Pump treatment favors faster output and active effort. In every case, keep dirty and treated water separate, clarify sediment before treatment, protect wet filter media from freezing, and carry the maintenance parts the instructions identify.
For air travel, drain and dry the filter, hoses, bottle, and reservoir before screening. No active NSF P231 listing was verified for any candidate. Sawyer’s current material did not provide a named external report for the exact Squeeze configuration or its long service-life rating. Katadyn did not publish contaminant-specific reduction percentages for the carbon insert.
